Short Description
Kathmandu is the central capital city of Nepal and the country's first metropolitan city. Among the two major neighboring cities, Lalitpur Metropolitan City lies to the south, while Bhaktapur Municipality is located to the east.
Nestled between four prominent hills—Shivapuri, Phulchowki, Nagarjun, and Chandragiri—Kathmandu enjoys a unique geographical setting and rich biodiversity. Shaped like a bowl, the city spans an area of 50.67 square kilometers at an elevation of approximately 1,400 meters (4,600 feet) above sea level, situated at 27°22′ N latitude and 85°20′ E longitude.
With a tradition of religious tolerance and strong social cohesion, the city boasts a history dating back nearly 2,000 years. A spiritual center for both Buddhists and Hindus, the Kathmandu Valley is a vibrant example of unity in diversity, showcasing thousands of festivals, ethnic groups, customs, and traditions. It is also regarded as the cultural and artistic hub of the Newar community, one of Nepal’s major ethnic groups.
Known for its living heritage of art and architecture, and home to distinctive ancient styles, Kathmandu is considered one of the world’s most remarkable heritage cities. It hosts numerous UNESCO World Heritage Sites including Swayambhunath, Boudhanath, Pashupatinath, and the Hanumandhoka Durbar Square, making it a prime destination for international visitors to Nepal.
